Sweet Sue's and Chesapeake Bay Views CC

Sun, December 03, 2017 12:00 PM | Deborah Bowman (Administrator)

Ride leader: Debby Bowman

Members: Janell Saunders, Linda Bankerd, Randy Sim

Guests: none

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/12231193 - 39 miles, starting out with a spin through the Pindells, then on to North Beach via Fisher's Station, McKendree-Jewell-Wilson, Friendship, Boyd's Turn and 5th St. After the rest stop at Sweet Sue's we followed the familiar route up Friendship to Fairhaven, Town Point, Leitch and Franklin Gibson to Bay Front. We enjoyed a quiet break from Bay Front by going up Brooks Woods and down Little, then crossed over Route 4 to finish the ride on Wrighton, Plummer and the smoothly-paved service road to Route 4.

Average speed: 13.3 mph for me, probably a bit higher for others since I fell behind a few times.

Weather: Mid 50s with sunshine and no wind. Sometimes we were a little cool, other times we were a bit overdressed, so on average we were comfortable. No complaints for an early December afternoon.

Chesapeake Bay: Calm and pale blue under a blue sky. High tide.

Farm animals: Numerous horses, some wearing blankets. The goats on Fisher's Station were out, along with a sheep.

Puppers: The big white dogs who live with the goats on Fisher's Station were chillaxing. Several other dogs were out enjoying the afternoon sun, playing in their front yards.

Mishaps and mechanicals: None, though near the end we rode through a lot of glass on the shoulders of Bay Front and Mount Zion Marlboro Rds, so we should all check our tires for lingering sharp bits. A pickup truck driver drove close and voiced some unhappiness after we made the turn from Boyd's Turn to 5th St in front of him.

Report: We enjoyed a pleasant winter bike ride today. For the most part we stayed close together on the first half of the ride. Randy left the rest stop ahead of Linda, Janell and me in order to get a head start. We caught up with him later, but bid him an early farewell when he decided to stay on Bay Front when we turned onto Brooks Woods. He waved from his truck as he headed home while we approached the park and ride on Southern Maryland Blvd.

While stopped at Sweet Sue's we noticed a group of cyclists meeting for a ride at a parking lot across the intersection. They passed us going up the hill on Friendship, we passed them as they stopped to regroup at the turn to Fairhaven, then we saw them again going the opposite way on Brooks Woods. We also saw a few solo riders enjoying an afternoon ride.

Many thanks to Randy, Linda and Janell for joining me on this ride!
