1/16 Southern Exposure: Port Tobacco River Park, Quailwood & Chapmans Landing

Tue, January 16, 2018 10:30 AM | Stephen Palincsar

Ride leader: Steve Palincsar

Members: Joan Oppel, Don Gardner, Darrell Meyer, Tom Roberts

Weather: Partly cloudy with a warm sun.  Low 30s at the start rising to the low 40s by the end of the ride.  Breezy at times.

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26630265  34 miles, 1150' of elevation gain.  Bumpy Oak/Rose Hill to Chapel Point and a stop at the new Port Tobacco River Park, the up Locust Grove to Springhill Newtown (a section of the road we very seldom see) and left on Glen Albin (again, we rarely go in this direction) to Oak and a rest stop at the Dash In in La Plata.  From there, MD-6 to Qualwood, Hawthorne to Marshall Corner, down Pomfret to the IHRT to Hawthorne, Chapmans Landing back to Bryans Road.

Mishaps & mechanicals: none   We were a little worried when Darrell decided to do Locust Grove twice and then didn't catch back up until we were almost ready to leave La Plata, but it's easy to underestimate just how far an excursion like that can set you back and how long it'll take to catch back up.

AMS: 12.2

It was a great day for riding.  It was in the low 30s at the start, but the sun was warm and with the right clothes riding was comfortable.  We stayed together as a group except when Tom and Darrell did a couple of loop-backs and of course Darrell's doing Locust Grove twice just for the hill of it.  We met Holly out doing a solo training ride at Bumpy Oak & the IHRT on the way back, and that was fun until she and Darrell started discussing CAC cards, which proved to be too much "inside baseball" for the rest of us.  Obviously, we get Polar Bear points for today's ride but really - no suffering was involved and a great time was had by all.
