1/21 Smallwood Church, Durham Church CC 37 mi

Sun, January 21, 2018 10:30 AM | Stephen Palincsar

Ride leader: Steve Palincsar

Members: Patricia Sanders, Jan Tucker, Pat Walthers, Sheila Harron, Bill Lowe -- the CC contingent; and Tom Short, Dave Mann, Barb & Ron Haney and Don Gardner -- the B contingent.

Weather: High 40s at the start rising to the low 60s by early afternoon; partly cloudy with a warm sun.  Another lovely taste of Spring.

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/11382689  37 miles, 1362' of elevation gain.

Mishaps & mechanicals: none

AMS: 12.7 for the CC contingent.

We set out together, but by the time we reached Smallwood Church the Bees were off the front.  We saw them leaving Mallows Bay Park as we arrived, and we saw them turning off Friendship Landing Road as we reached it, at which point, Jan skipped the rest stop and joined the Bees.   We saw evidence of construction work at the (former) Nanjemoy Store: the familiar ramp up to the front door and the roof over the ramp are gone.   We also saw Holly at the corner of Poorhouse and Ripley, most likely doing another solo training ride.

The bees thank you for a nice route! What a great day to be outside!

I agree with Barbara Haney. The route was very nice. Maybe we should consider using the Pisgah Park starting point for some of the Tuesday morning Southern Exposure rides.

Even though it's a bit farther to drive for most people, it does open up a lot of nice roads that we can't do under the usual Southern Exposure mileage limit. I for one would not be opposed!

For those of us in Northern Virginia, on a weekday, it is a much longer drive than Bryans Road - at least an extra 20-25 minutes for me.

It's an extra 18-19 miles of driving for us, around 9.5 additional miles each way.
