Leader: Joan Oppel
Members: Ron Altemus and Larry Peed
Route: Chicamuxen to the Nanjemoy Community Center, return via Poseytown, Bowie, Baptist Church to Ironsides/Mason Springs and Hawthorne.
Weather: Nice and sunny, temperatures about 40 at the start and rising a few degrees.
Distance: Leader finished with 40.2 ( we added a bit on Greenleek Hill off of 6, and Ron and Joan visited the facilities on the IHRT at Livingston before heading "home").
AMS: We all rode together until a short distance from the end.
Mishaps/Mechanicals: Ron had a flat tire at mile 14. And it was an interesting endurance test: the first flat on that tire after 3,000 miles and the tube had completely adhered itself to the inside of the tire, which was pretty tight on the rim. Only Joan's small hands could get inside to start to peel the tube and even that took a few minutes, it was as if tire and tube were Gorilla-glued together. The culprit was a tiny piece of glass. Once the darn tube was out, the tire and a new tube went back together smoothly.
Report: The three of us agreed that the wind was not a big factor for us, only in a few short sections, because most of the roads were somewhat protected by trees and houses. The community center makes a nice rest stop, warm today, welcoming - in fact we were invited to partake of the $3 senior lunch being served.
We're really glad we got out today!
