3/10 Indian Head Rail Trall All class ride

Sun, March 10, 2019 1:00 PM | Ron Altemus (Administrator)

Leader:  Ron Altemus

Members:  Lynne & Wayne Blake-Hedges, Belinda Acre, Majesta Hartley, Donaro Gardner, Jane & Jim Hudnall, Sean Dixon, Diane Harris & Sam Perry ( both riding from Accokeek FD), and Janell Saunders (joining us enroute)

Route:   the original one and only Indian Head Rail Trail from the Village Green to White Plains and return, though with slight modifications!  SMECO is still working on the trail between Hawthorne and Woodland, so outbound we took Strauss to Hawthorne to get onto the trail.  Returning, some of us used the trail, going around the fencing (put up for no apparent reason other than "they do stuff like that!"), or using parts of Strauss.

Weather:   not as originally advertised as we had temps in the upper 40s at ride start, overcast skies, and a chilly breeze.  By rides end, the sun was shining, the breeze was a tailwind, and the temperature had risen to 60ish.

AMS:   swept at 13 mph

Mechanicals/Mishaps:  none

Report:   as commented above under "Weather" the ride didn't start as we hoped.  Fortunately, it continued to warm throughout the afternoon and we had a most enjoyable ride.  Riding in small groups not overly spaced out, we stopped at Calvin's bench on our way to White Plains.  The return was a bit more fragmented since some riders had different starting points.  All the same, plenty of opportunities for conversation and camaraderie.   Lots of other trail users:  many cyclists of all ages and abilities; dog walkers, some with reluctant walking partners; and numerous others enjoying the trail and the hint of Spring.

Sam Perry and I wanted a bit more distance and climbing so we started from the Accokeek Firehouse. To get to Marshall Hall Rd, we took Barry's Hill, a part of which had water flowing across the road. This was the first time I actually felt the bike could be pushed off the road by the water! Took us a little over an hour to meet the others at the Indian Head Village Green. Next time we'll allow 15 minutes more to get to the start.
