Report: Road captain Barb Haney assured excellent weather and roads for us by moving the start time ahead two hours. I was fortunate to have two experienced and skilled riders (and overall nice people) join me for the ride. All three of us are former/recovering AA riders, who are coming back from injuries, in addition to experiencing the normal aging process.
We started out on the IHRT with the four AA riders, and planned to hang with them until the first hill on Bumpy Oak. However, that didn't work out, and we dropped off before mile three -- still on the trail -- in order to slow the pace a couple miles per hour.
Our trio worked well together steadily to the rest stop at Goose Bay Marina, averaging a bit above range at 18.3. We spent awhile at the stop, lounging in comfortable chairs and chatting with the AA and B riders who were there. No one really wanted to get up and get back on the bikes after that, but we did.
The return trip was a little slower due to more up hills and maybe the wind. Approaching Durham Church, it felt like rain was coming, but luckily that didn't happen. Ron decided to drop off at about mile 36 and take it easy for the last leg, this being only his third outdoors ride this year. Scott and I continued, skipping the last rest stop with 6 miles to go, and keeping up a good effort to finish with a high A average of 17.8 for the ride.
Kudos to Scott and Ron for their great comeback recovery. At this rate, they will again be riding with the AA's soon. Thanks to Barb, Jim, and Jane for organizing this all-class event.
