Ride Report:

What a nice day for a bike ride in the mountains!

I was worried that no one else was going to make the drive but then Pete emailed me that he would be there with two guests and Matthew was waiting in the parking lot when I arrived.

As per usual for this ride, we all rode at our own pace sometimes together and sometimes alone.  There was frequent regrouping.  Eun had never done this ride before which put her at disadvantage as far as knowing how much effort to put into the long climbs – she did well.

Elizabeth couldn’t find one of her gloves after stopping at one of our regroup points.  We looked for it but it we couldn’t find it.  Either it blew off the wall where we were sitting or perhaps she left it in the car in her rush to get going?  Anyway, there are certainly worse mishaps that could befall her.

And speaking of potential mishaps, Matthew spotted a black bear about 40-50 feet away during one of his climbs.  Typical of black bears, there was no problem and the bear ambled off into the woods.

We passed two guys climbing with trailers and a full touring load.  I got a quick chance to talk to them.  They are on their way to California – very cool!

Some folks opted to turn-around 22 miles into the ride and some folks continued to Big Meadows.  At Big Meadows we discovered the convenience store there was closed for renovations – oh no!  We made do with the limited selection of snacks available at the visitor’s center.

The average is for the whole ride from the ride leader’s computer.  An interesting statistic is that my average was 12.4 MPH at the top of the last (11 mile) descent into Sperryville.  On that leg we were moving fast and having a blast.  I had about 6300 feet of climbing for the day which is within 50 feet of the prediction of Ride-With-GPS.

I very much enjoyed the ride and it was well worth all of the driving.  I’m sending my thanks to all who joined me.

You picked a good day to do this ride, Blake. I was never too hot or too cold, and the winds were fairly low. Forty-five miles and 5,300 feet proved to be enough for our little group. We finished together. Thanks again for leading!
