Longer Ride to the Strawberry Festival - CC

Sun, May 19, 2019 11:00 AM | Deborah Bowman (Administrator)

Leader: Debby Bowman

Members: Phil Mitchell, Harry Kidd, Susan Estes, Monica Irmler, Walt Roscello, Fred Sawyer

Guests: Ann Sawyer

Route: 46 (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29995022) or 39 (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30000590) miles. This was shorter variation of a route led by Steve Palincsar a couple of years ago. From Northern Senior Center we went south on the Three Notch Trail, jumped over to Old Village Rd for variety, then jogged back to the trail at Baptist Church Rd. We turned on Laurel Grove Rd and took Kavanagh, Loveville, Pin Cushion, Sunnyside  and Colton Point Rd to a stop at the Seventh District Park. That's where the routes split. The longer route took Sugar Hole, Oakley, Colton Point, Bushwood Wharf, Bushwood and Hurry Rd to the festival at Christ Church. The shorter route followed Colton Point to Maddox and Bushwood. After the festival we returned to the senior center via Chaptico Rd, Baptist Church and the trail.

Weather: Freakin' hot.

Farm report: Horses and cows. Many rows of green corn stalks, still pretty short.

Ride report: We were a mixed group, not all riding together but seeing each other at the rest stops. Fred and Ann rode ahead, fairly fast. Phil and Sue were out to enjoy a more relaxed pace than usual. They and Walt were ahead of yours truly for most of the ride. Monica and I rode together and opted for the shortcut between the park and festival. Harry was not yet ready to go at 11 but he encouraged us to ride on without him. He arrived at the church shortly after Monica and I, bought 4 quarts of berries and headed back. We saw Belinda and Diana at the festival. Riding back to the senior center on Baptist Church Rd, the heat started to get to me -- it's amazing how fast you can go from "feeling okay" to "definitely not okay." As we crossed Mechanicsville Rd on the trail, we saw Dan dropping off Diana and Belinda. He offered a ride back to the senior center and I gladly took him up on it, while Monica rode the rest of the way.  Phil, Walt and Sue were there when we arrived. Despite the heat we were all glad to have gotten in a ride and we enjoyed the fresh strawberries, cake and ice cream.

Thanks to all who joined me for this ride -- it was great seeing everyone. Special thanks to Steve for providing routes that stand the test of time, Monica for hanging with me as I rode slower and slower as the day progressed, and Dan for being a great SAG driver.
