The inaugural ride for OHBTC’s recumbent tandem trike pilot program met with a lot of praise from the stoker. Kathy, a senior citizen, had not bicycled since childhood. She enjoyed the trail’s quiet, shady beauty of forest and farmland scenery. This D ride had great weather and temps, sunny, no humidity, and 66 degrees at the start. The ride didn’t officially meet “D” category standards, since the average speed was 2-3 mph slower because of trail surface root damage and a downed tree. Trip distance was a little over 5 mi.
For any shakedown cruise, there are usually some problems. The primary problem on this ride was adjustment of the stoker’s seat to achieve proper fit. I’ll be working with the mechanic to establish a less complicated way to adjust both seating positions for future rides. However, the overall experience was very successful.
