6/11 - Southern Exposure Goose Bay & Pisgah - A 35 miles

Tue, June 11, 2019 10:00 AM | Barbara Haney

Leader: Barbara Haney

Members: Ron Haney, Tom Roberts, Sam Perry, Pete Czapiewski, Cynthia Anderson, Elizabeth Niles, Barb Haley

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27781147 A nice route by Ron A taking us in a clockwise direction to Goose Bay and back via Pisgah

Weather: Fabulous temps for mid-June from upper 60s to low 70s, low humidity, brilliant blue sky. NW winds 10-15 mph were a factor.

AMS: 17.8

Report: For the second week in a row we had a great A group that worked together really well the entire ride. Tailwinds helped give us an above-A pace to the rest stop at Goose Bay. We thoroughly enjoyed the veranda and the comfy chairs for a while until reluctantly giving them up to the B group. We hadn’t been looking forward to the return trip into the headwind, but found that our teamwork, staying together and taking shorter turns at the front, really did help a lot. (The final 3 or so miles on Livingston were a bit marred by heavier than normal traffic, a line of cars behind that couldn’t seem to get around us, one of them honking continuously. The front rider couldn’t pull off so had to do a really long turn into the wind (thanks, Elizabeth!). Eventually all the cars passed safely and no one seemed angry at us.) It was overall a very pleasant ride that could have turned into a slog but didn’t. I hope we can have many more of these very cooperative and fun A-paced rides this summer!

Note: it would be great to also have a B ride leader on days like these, since the sizeable B group wasn’t sure whether to sign in with A or CC. With the “CC & friends” designation it’s not always possible for one ride leader to keep track of everyone’s whereabouts and safety.
