Ride Name: Watermelon Ride
Leader: Joan Oppel
Members: Ron Altemus, Linda Blackman, Mark Blackman, Polly Choate, Jessica Hirschhorn
Route & Distance: The 32 mile Watermelon route - around Livingston to Gospel Union to Bryans Rd, down Livingston to the long stretch on Hawthorne up to Ripley. Then Poorhouse to Pisgah, return via Mason Springs, Chix, Hawthorne, Chapman's Landing, Marshall Hall & Barry's Hill to Accokeek.
Weather: Not too bad considering the heat/humidity of the past few days. Lower humidity and ride temperatures in high 70's, low 80's.
Mechanicals/Mishaps: One dropped chain, quickly resolved
Report: The riders all started out together but one or two dropped back. We regrouped a couple of times but the slower folks said it was ok to remain as two sections. Pisgah Store was the rest stop, some riders wanted to use a rest room so we went to the firehouse, rang the bell at the "main entrance" (so designated by a small sign) and were let in. One rider took an alternate return, the rest went on to Chapman's Landing, where they remarked on the shade and coolness. Barry's Hill was flooded at the marsh but the center of the road was shallow and easily rideable.
And the watermelon was really delicious!! Expertly sliced and provided by Azalea and Michael Butler and Jackie Schoch.
