7/16 Southern Exposure: Welcome>Smallwood Church CC/C Touring 36 miles

Tue, July 16, 2019 9:00 AM | Ron Altemus (Administrator)

Leader:   Ron Altemus

Members:   Jay Lewis, Karen McMillan, Joan Oppel

Route:   https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28874627  36 miles, 1223' elevation gain.  Outbound down Livingston, up Mighty Mount Pisgah and then Ripley/Annapolis Woods/Fire Tower to a rest stop at Scott's in Welcome. Middle leg utilized Durham Church, Ironsides, Smallwood Church, Sweetman, and Bicknell to a second rest stop at Pisgah Store. Final return via Mason Springs, Hawthorne, Lower Wharf, and Chapman's Landing.

Weather:   sunny, negligible winds, and temps starting in the upper 70s, reaching the low 90s by ride's end.  Humidity built in with the temperatures rising.

AMS:  swept at 12.7 mph

Mechanicals/Mishaps:   none known

Report:   A small CC/C contingent and then Karen rode the first leg with the Bs, opting to shorten the ride after Scott's due to the heat.  The remaining three rode together until Smallwood Church, where Jay went ahead with plans to bypass Pisgah.  However, several of the Bs were moving a bit slower than normal, so we basically rode back together with them.

The route was chosen based on roads that would offer a lot of shade.  It was definitely cooler under a tree canopy as stretches w/o shade were brutally hot.

Wildlife didn't seem to be as affected by the heat.  One turtle rescue performed on Ironsides; two deer bolting across Smallwood Church in front of riders; and, a turkey gobbling across Mason Springs.
