Weather: Cool, scattered precipitation, thunderstorms audible but not in the area of the ride
Report: I cancelled the ride last week as there were nasty thunderstorms in the areas around the ride, but none ended up actually being a threat. Better safe than sorry. Today the storms were not a threat to the riders, but we did get wet.
I arrived 10 minutes early after driving through a number of really bad storm cells. Empty parking lot. A few minutes later, company rolled in. Two rode to the ride, talk about optimistic. I was happy since I wasn't going to have to ride this alone! We discussed our sanity in riding today and decided why the heck not give it a try.
As we were traveling along Rt. 6 it became wet from prior rain and we were throwing large rooster tails from our wheels. Not much fun while drafting. Roads were dry again when we got to Bowling. The road had been chip sealed and it only had a tiny bit of loose stone on the very edge of the road. They had patched the holes in the road before the chip seal. Not a smooth road surface, but much better overall than it had been.
Our luck ran out on Rt. 301. We got rained on. Not a hard rain, but we got thoroughly wet. We eventually got past the rain and finished the ride on dry roads.
Forgot one important thing: My car key shorted out due to the rain and would not unlock the doors. Instead when a key was pressed the panic alarm would go off. I'm sure that I was popular in the neighborhood. I unlocked the car with the keypad on the door (recently replaced). The key worked fine in the ignition and now works to lock and unlock the doors. It will be getting its own baggie. My phone was double bagged and it was fine.
I would call it a fun ride. It is enjoyable to get out and do a club ride, even if the weather isn't quite perfect. It might be a few days before my shoes dry out. That is a good reason to own more than one pair.
Thank you for joining me.
