10/3 Best of Brandywine: Five Points at Fivepointsville

Janell at The Little Store with a few Old Friends

Ride leader: Steve Palincsar

Members: Larry Peed, Janell Saunders, Bob Howell, Barry Winkelman, Jay Lewis, Lou Dall'Orso, Linda Bankerd, Donaro Gardner, Sam Perry

Weather: Humid, overcast, temps in the high 70s and a 10-13 mph wind.

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31223895  41 miles, 1381' elevation gain.  Unusual in two respects: hilly for a ride to Malcolm, and perhaps only the 2nd time this century that we've done a route that traveled all five of the roads that make up the 5-way intersection at Malcolm.

Mishaps & mechanicals: Larry turned back with knee pain.

AMS: 11.8 at the back.

Although it was billed as C/CC and friends, once again it was almost all friends.  Janell rode with me, which made the day much happier and more pleasant for me, saving me from scores of gloomy solo miles musing on the extinction of the C and CC classes.  We saw the friends at both rest stops, but only briefly.  Bob Howell writes, "Lou, Don and I stayed together.  Linda and Barry brought up the rear.  Sam cut the ride short a 5 Points and headed back after the Moreland Market stop.  And Jay did his 'own thing' at the intersection of MD-382N and MD-381S [i.e., Croom Rd & Brandywine] at mile 22.3."  Of course he did - we wouldn't have it any other way!

Even though it looked kind of gloomy, it was a surprisingly nice day for riding.  There was a hint (only a hint, mind you) of fall in the air, made more evident by some of the companions we encountered at the second rest stop at The Little Store.
