6/12 Southern Exposure: Smallwood Church>Chapmans Landing CC Touring

Tue, June 12, 2018 10:00 AM | Ron Altemus (Administrator)
Leader:  Ron Altemus

Members:  Harry Kidd, George Chiamulera

Route:   https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27716320     38 mi/1256' elevation gain.  Outbound - Livingston, Chicamuxen, Smallwood Church, and Mason Springs to a rest stop at Pisgah store.  Return via Poorhouse, Rose Hill, Bumpy Oak, the IHRT, Hawthorne, and Chapmans Landing back to our start.  Nice long stretches with plenty of shade and very little in the way of vehicular traffic.

Weather:  very strange!  There was a yellow glowing orb in the sky, a sky that was blue instead of multiple shades of gray, humidity levels such that one did not instantly break into a sweat, temps in the low to mid 70s, and wafting zephyrs from the SE.

AMS:  swept at 14

Mechanicals/Mishaps:  Steve Palincsar, riding to the start from Accokeek, took a large nail in a tire, necessitating a boot to get back to his vehicle and terminating his plans for the day.

Report:  It was a great day for riding.  We traveled at a good clip to Pisgah, somewhat broken up, but after the rest stop, rode together the rest of the way.   Saw Holly Carr going the opposite way on the IHRT and unfortunately missed Jay Lewis as your faithful reporter is somewhat cellphone challenged.

If only I'd have waited one day to replace my back tire! Instead of ruining a nearly new tire rotated off the front wheel, that roofing nail would have destroyed a worn tire ready for replacement. That wouldn't have been nearly as painful.
