Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28719562. 58 miles, ~2500 feet of climbing, from Utica Park in Frederick up to Emmitsburg and bit of Pennsylvania. A zig-zagging meander using some favorite roads and some rarely (or never before) used, with brief stops to look at the WWI Memorial in Emmitsburg and a historical marker noting the earliest settler in the valley. Planned rest stops were a rest room break at Loys Station Park, a store in Emmitsburg and another store in Thurmont. One rider shortened the route after the stop in Emmitsburg by skipping the loop into Pennsylvania, and two others opted for a more direct route that cut a couple of miles after Thurmont. We also added an impromptu stop at the Mount St Mary's student center due to the heat.
Weather: Summer in October! Early morning clouds burned off to blue skies, sunshine and humidity.
Average speed: somewhere between 12 and 13 mph at the back.
Mishaps and mechanicals: Ride leader noticed an error on the cue sheet after the last rest stop. One rider missed a turn and then had difficulty using his Garmin to get back on track due to difficulty seeing the screen in the bright sun. Fortunately he encountered another cyclist on Wilhyde Rd who directed him back to Utica Park.
Overall we enjoyed a great bike ride! The heat was more oppressive than expected, and we were glad to have the chance to add the extra stop for cold water, vending machine snacks a bit of A/C at Mount St Mary's. We rode through miles of farmland, with plenty of creek and river crossings to add to the scenery and add a bit of climbing, too.
Many thanks to all who came out for the ride!
