Owings Cliffs, Heading South on Fairhaven Rd
Ride leader: Steve Palincsar
Members: Patricia Sanders
Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26761408 37 mi, 1418' elevation gain.
Weather: Sunny, 53 at the start rising to over 70 by early afternoon, 5-7 mph winds. Too chilly for the outdoor tables at the Chesapeake Market to be deployed, but a thoroughly delightful day for riding
Mishaps & mechanicals: none
Today's route was created in the winter of 2018 but probably was never actually ridden before. We took the Rt 4 service road to Wrighton and MD-258, took McKendree to Jewell, then turned left on Jewel (perhaps for the first time ever?) across MD-2 onto Fairhaven, then went left on Fairhaven, down Leitch back to Fairhaven (with a brief photo stop at Owings Cliffs), climbing up to Friendship Rd and down to the rest stop at the Chesapeake Market.
After lunch (in a quiet, nearly empty deli) we continued on to North Beach, taking 5th Street back to Boyd's Turn, the direction we never go. It's a 2.3 mi rolling climb, gaining 185' and losing 52' in the process, with what looks like a steep grade leaving North Beach that turns out to be 6.6% at its steepest point. From Boyd's Turn we went across MD-2 (once again grateful for the roundabout) up Wilson and back on McKendree (much more fun this way!) turning right on Bay Front and left on Brooks Woods to a left on Greenock, a quick rest stop at Lothian and a quick run on Southern Maryland Blvd back to the Park & Ride.
The Dash-In at the Shell station on MD-408 & So. MD Blvd is closed for renovation. Given the (all too often, and very much so today) deplorable state of the portolet at the BP station, that leaves us with the Dunkin Donuts for a rest room at this ride start. No idea how long the Dash In will be closed, but the workmen at the Bryans Road Burger King (also closed for renovation) told us that it would be closed until May. So until later this spring, at Waysons Park & Ride it's buy a donut, spend a penny.
