Weather: a spectacular early fall day. Sunny bright blue skies with scarcely a cloud, high visibility, 15 mph breeze w/gusts up to 25 mph. Around 63 at the start rising to 70 degrees by the time we finished.
Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/34340460 31.8 mi, 1468' elevation gain.
Mishaps & mechanicals: Around 2 mi into the ride on Martin Rd. Joan Oppel rode into a pothole and went down. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but Mary, who was riding behind her, said it looked as though once she started going down she steered herself off the road and onto the grass on the shoulder before crashing.
That new MIPS helmet Joan was so proud of came in handy today, because she hit her head pretty hard when she went down but evidently was saved from a concussion. She also was gored in the abdomen by her handlebar and needed a stitch, and was bruised and scraped.
They called 911 and Emergency Services took her to the hospital in Oxon HIll (we're all wondering about that, since there are other hospitals closer to Brandywine than that) and Ron and Mary accompanied her and brought her car to the hospital. Latest update: Joan's back home; nothing broken; told to take it easy for a while.
It was meant to be a relaxed, no drama short scenic ride (I won't say "easy," not with all the climbing on the route) to enjoy a lovely fall day. The drama happened anyway.
